Montreal, where we have spent four days, is a UNESCO City of Design, one of six worldwide and the only such designated city in North America. It shows in the views from every street corner. There is an old section along the river, with narrow streets, and as the town rises to the heights of Port Royal Park, there is an amazing mix of neo-classical, beaux-arts, and modernist buildings every which way. And numerous large churches. The Museum of Art is two buildings that represent this mix – a classical pavilion from 1912 and, across the street (and connected underground), a modernist gallery designed by Moshe Safdie in 1991. In addition to walking around, camera in hand, looking up like the tourists we are, we also found a wonderful botanical garden containing The Insectarium (mostly dead) and the Montreal Science Museum, which is full of clever interactive exhibits on materials, design, and futuristic technology. Julia and Marty tried the brain wave contest that involves moving a small ball through a tube. Julia won.
