Old Route 66 mostly was buried underneath Interstate 40 as it heads west across Arizona. But one section was left intact—the so-called Oatman road. Here twisting narrow two-lane runs through an otherwise barren desert with hairpin tours so sharp the speed limit often becomes 15 mph. Little wonder a better highway was eventually built. Oatman itself is an old mining town that lives on as a few shops and a saloon. And wild donkeys, left over from the glory days. First we saw the sign; just outside of Oatman we saw the donkeys. Of course we had to stop.
