Drought and warring neighbors would be enough for any tribe, one might think, but there was worse! At some point around the year 1100, approximately the middle of the inhabitation period, a large volcano erupted a few miles from present day Flagstaff. The lava spread for miles; the ashes covered 800 square miles and created a number of cones that are still prominent in the landscape. Underneath all that are numerous pueblos and pit houses. The area is preserved as Sunshine Crater National Monument. We hiked a lesser cone to Lennox Crater and walked through one of the lava flows. Fortunately Julia was able to detail some of the standard features of volcanoes.
