We are on our way to the Denver area for the weekend, to meet up with Andrew as well as Bob’s sister-in-law Joann. So our time between Canton, MI and Boulder, CO is more limited than we would have preferred. The consequence is that many possible detours and site seeing opportunities have to be passed by. It is one of the immutable laws of travel that there is never enough time to do everything, but this week is even more constrained than usual. Nevertheless, even though we had to press on through western Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois, we became more expansive once we crossed the Mississippi River on the Iowa border. Suddenly we were in the center of the Quad Cities: Moline, Rock Island, Bettendorf, and Davenport. Serious river towns with grain elevators, river locks, and even casinos.

We stayed in Davenport on the Iowa side. Downtown is the Figge Art Museum in a wonderful modernist building and an interesting sky bridge. Otherwise, things are fairly quiet. Because Moline is the home of John Deere tractors, we ate dinner at the Iowa Machine Shed in order to thoroughly sample local fare (October is pork month).
