Today we touched the Pacific Ocean at Long Beach, CA (above). We were reminded that the last seawater contact was on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, in September. According to Mapquest, a direct trip between there (Cavendish, PEI) and here (Long Beach) is 3,623 miles. Obviously we have been doing some zigging and zagging, since we have over 7,000 miles on the GPS. One of the highlights of our visit to the beach was the Aquarium of the Pacific. Touch pools are all the rage in these places, but AOP did the ultimate. In addition to the usual assortment of sea cucumbers, crabs, and sea stars to grab, they had sharks and rays in the touch pool! Admittedly, the sharks were small but the ray was full size – about the size of a single bed. And there were eight different varieties of sharks to rub. Sharks are smooth to the touch; rays are bumpy.
